The Voice Referendum and Schools

What teachers need to know

About the event

Picture
The Voice Referendum in 2023 presented an opportunity to teach students about:
  • democracy and democratic representation
  • referendums and the Australian constitution
  • the responsibility of citizens to vote
This event, held simultaneously at the University of Technology Sydney and live on Zoom, focused on effective teaching strategies that can invite students to have robust, respectful and constructive explorations and discussions of the referendum. With the failure of the referendum, these strategies can now be used to support students to reflect on the process and and implications going forward.

The Voice Referendum Education Kit

The Australian Human Rights Commission have a teacher resource kit for teaching about The Voice referendum. The educational resources seek to minimise harm, promote cultural humility and focus the conversation on human rights principles as they relate to the proposed Voice to Parliament.
